Special Diet

I was on staff for the Women’s Great Banquet a few years ago. It’s a 3-day retreat weekend. I’ve been involved with the Great Banquet for 15 years. I’d worked every position on the weekend except kitchen crew. I was excited to be asked to head up the kitchen crew that year!

According to our schedule, we would wake up every morning at 4:30am. We would make coffee, start breakfast and set up the dining room. That’s how my weekend went. Feeding 60 people 3 meals a day (plus snacks) was actually fun for me. But one thing overwhelmed us at times. Special diets.

We had ladies who needed gluten free, diabetic, and lactose intolerant diets. We even had 2 people on a Paleo diet. I was under some pressure to meet these needs.  At one point I just wanted to announce to the dining room, “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit!” But we didn’t crack under the pressure and all the ladies were thankful for our efforts.

It would be easier in this life to be able to treat everyone exactly the same. But we all have our own unique needs. God knows this. While we are all loved equally, God gives us each the strength and courage necessary to do his work in this world. We all have different stories, different experiences, and different challenges. But God loves us beyond all understanding and meets all our needs.

See you Sunday!
