Flight
One night, several years ago, I lost my faith. The plane was screaming down the runway on takeoff when one of the three engines went out. The nose was already lifting into the air when the pilot aborted the takeoff. He managed to stop the plane with only a few feet of runway to spare. Fire trucks came out to spray foam on the overheated brakes before the plane was towed back to the gate. It was as close as I ever want to come to a plane crash. I lost my faith that night… in airplanes.
Faith. How is your faith anchored? By experience? By reason? Maybe by scripture or teachings? Do you believe only because you were raised in the faith? Is your faith wearing a little thin? We all experience a ‘crisis of faith’ moment in our lives. It’s not always as dramatic as a plane crash. More often our faith atrophies like an under used muscle. In the midst of our busy lives and facebook browsing we neglect our spirituality. The result feels very much like screaming down a runway with only two functioning engines.
I encourage you to take some time and examine your spiritual life. Take time to pray about God’s will for your life. Take time out of your busy schedule to relax and just be. Get back into the habit of coming to worship. Attend bible study. Above all, know that you are not alone. We need each other to strengthen our faith and live out God’s will for our lives. It is then that we can truly fly.
See you Sunday!
