The Fire of Pentecost

This Sunday, June 5th, is Pentecost Sunday. Be sure to wear something red! Orange and yellow are fine too. Something flame colored. Why do I want us to dress like fire? Pentecost Sunday is the time that we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. The Bible gives us the account of the Holy Spirit descending on the early followers of Jesus. The book of Acts describes the event.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (Acts 2:1-4)

The entire scene is hard to believe and yet we are the Church because of this extraordinary gift of God’s Spirit. Jesus promised his disciples that he would send an Advocate, someone to comfort them, to council them, and to give them wisdom and truth. The same is promised to us today. God is with us by this miracle.

If you find yourself needing a reminder of this powerful truth, I invite you to join us Sunday morning. The fire of God’s power, which burns within us and among us, is what we are celebrating this Sunday. So come! And don’t forget to dress like fire!

See you Sunday!
