Origins
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3)
Scientists have dedicated their lives to the discovery of the origins of our universe. Today most have settled on what we lay folks know as the theory of the Big Bang. The idea is that all the matter of our universe was once compressed into an unimaginably small point. Everything we are, everything that ever was and ever will be was compressed into a tiny point of density and heat. All at once, the pressure released and everything expanded. In the blink of an eye, in the span of a breath, all the matter of the universe exploded outward. As the heat of the expanding matter cooled, stars began to form. The darkness was tamed. And there was light.
While scientists still work diligently to learn more about ‘how’ the universe was created, I am more concerned with ‘why.’ Genesis explains that God’s first command as creator was simply “Let there be Light.” God hovered and brooded over the darkness and chaos and then spoke creation into being. Beginning with Light.
In this season of Easter, I believe that God still speaks light into this dark world. It is no coincidence that scripture refers to Christ as “The Light of the world.” As followers of Christ we are to reflect this Light into every dark corner. We are to stand firm and persistently shine in the face of injustice, despair, and chaos.
All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. (John 1:3-5)
