Doubt

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

Faith and doubt have a very complex relationship. Each has the power to weaken the other. As we grow to trust God, our faith begins to overcome our doubts. Yet, if our trust in God is compromised, our doubts are able to overcome and weaken our faith. Oddly enough though, the greatest faith springs from wrestling with our doubts. So, what is this relationship between faith and doubt? It’s complicated.

The writer of Hebrews gives us a very concise definition of faith. But how do we apply it to our everyday lives? Take a moment to think this through. What do you hope for? Joy? Peace? Wholeness? Justice? Love? Life? What assurance does the world give you that these things are achievable? I have lost all faith that the world I see is able to give me what I hope for.

When we face death hoping for life, conflict hoping for peace, brokenness hoping for wholeness, or oppression hoping for justice, our efforts produce very limited results. But, where the world we ‘see’ is powerless, we can be assured in the power of God who is unseen. On the cross, Christ has proven his love for us. In the resurrection, Christ has proven his power to give us life.

I invite you to walk through your doubts in hope. God’s Love always walks with you… even if you can’t quite see.

See you Sunday!
