Waiting and Hoping

As I walked across the living room last night, I caught a glimpse of a twitching tail behind the recliner. My orange cat, Charlie, was lying in wait to ambush me on my way to the kitchen. He’s 17lbs of cat and he ambushes “claws out”! He’s not a mean cat, he just takes playtime very seriously. And he’s the picture of patience.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. (Lamentations 3:25)

These scriptures remind us to wait patiently for the Lord. This can be so difficult. Especially if we are waiting for security, hope, or healing. We cry out to God to help us, heal our loved ones, protect us from harm, or keep us secure from financial woes. Crying out to God is what we are supposed to do when we are in need. But then what?

Patience is not easy. Charlie was born with the gift of patience for hunting. For us mere humans, patience is listed as a spiritual gift in Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Through the power of the Holy Spirit (not our power), God gives us the ability to wait for Him patiently and faithfully.

So, when you find yourself waiting for God to answer your prayer:

  • Look to scripture to give you encouragement.

  • Speak with spiritual mentors about your struggles.

  • Pray.

May the God of all understanding and might guide you into the way of peace.
See you Sunday!
