Sabbath

So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God’s rest also cease from their labors as God did from his. Hebrews 4:9-10

I saw a commercial the other day promoting Maytag refrigerators. A man was standing in the kitchen in a Maytag uniform holding an assortment of refrigerated goods and jogging in place. He was the family refrigerator. The family would walk by him periodically and take an item while he looked into the camera and spoke about being the only appliance that never rests. Ever. That’s what he was made to do. But we are not made this way.

We are built to work, to play, to laugh, to learn, to mourn, to dance, to teach, to build, to worship, and to rest. Worshiping and resting go hand in hand. It is in rest that you reflect on life. Once you’ve stopped ‘doing’ life you have a chance to evaluate all this busy-ness. Ask the important questions. Are you doing what God would have you do with your life? Can you do better? What parts of your life are in good working order? What parts need some attention?

We sometimes feel that we can’t stop. This is a lie. We must stop. Or like a car on an endless road trip, we will eventually break down. You can’t safely change a flat tire while going 70 mph down the intestate. You have to pull over and stop. God has commanded rest into our lives with him. Its called Sabbath. Rest and worship are inseparably intertwined in the practice of Sabbath. Take the time. You won’t be disappointed.

See you Sunday!
