He is Risen!
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:31-32)
He is risen, indeed! Easter has come! The tomb is empty, and Death is defeated! Alleluia! And here’s the big question, “Now what?” What are we to do with this news? Our friends on the road to Emmaus might give us a hint.
If you’ve read their story in Luke’s gospel, then you know that these two disciples are leaving Jerusalem for home. They are leaving behind all their hopes and dreams that the messiah has come to free them. As far as they know, all of these hopes are buried in a tomb. Even if the women think otherwise. So, they are going home. It is on this road that a stranger joins them on their journey.
The resurrection happened and they missed it. Death was defeated and they didn’t know it. So, they are walking back to where they began. But Jesus meets them where they are and opens their eyes! They run back to Jerusalem. The story hasn’t ended after all! It’s only just begun!
So, how will we respond to the news? Once the Easter baskets and decorations are put away will anything in our hearts have changed? Do we believe that the tomb was really empty? That’s the real question isn’t it? If you are struggling to find hope in your life, I invite you to listen to Christ on your journey. Let him reveal to you the truth of what is happening. The story has not ended. It has only just begun!
See you Sunday!
