1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. (1 Corinthians 12:4-6)

When I was younger, one of my favorite hobbies was cooking. It still is for that matter. But my least favorite thing was public speaking. Becoming a restaurant manager fit me like a glove. Had someone told me that I would one day be a preacher I would have thought that person insane. Actually, I would respond with, “Well, you just don’t know me very well.”

We all possess certain talents, interests, and gifts. As time goes on we run the risk of claiming certain gifts as our own and banishing other talents away. “Oh, I can’t cook.” “I’m just not organized.” “There’s no way I could ____” What gifts have you been given? What gifts do you believe are NOT yours? Is it possible that you have an untapped talent?

We are entering a new year as a congregation. Any successful organization knows how to match talent to a task. But I believe that we should go a step further. I challenge each member to consider stretching yourselves a little this year. Is God calling you to a ministry that frightens you just a little? If so, that’s pretty exciting!

So maybe you know nothing about gardening or teaching or maybe even cooking. If God calls you out of your comfort zone this year, then I encourage you to follow. We will be organizing our committees soon and the calls to service will come. Let us prepare ourselves for service. And may we allow Christ to lead us outside our comfort zones.

See You Sunday!
