Storm

A very strong wind came up on the lake. The waves came over the sides and into the boat so that it was already full of water.  Jesus was at the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a cushion. His followers woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are drowning!”  Jesus stood up and commanded the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and it became completely calm.  Jesus said to his followers, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The followers were very afraid and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!
(Mark 4:38-41)

What makes a storm? According to meteorologists there are many factors. The main ingredients necessary seem to be atmospheric instability and energy in the form of heat. Simply put, storms are born of chaos fed by energy.

The storms of life are fed in much the same way. At times these storms seem to be as untamable as the weather. All our efforts to be in control often result in feeding the chaos. How long are we willing to fight the storm before we turn to Christ?

Jesus knew the disciples were afraid. He knew they were powerless. The lesson was this, they had to learn to turn to him in the midst of the chaos. He was the only one in the boat with the power to calm the storm. May you come to realize that he is in the boat with you as well.

See you Sunday!
