Thy Kingdom Come...
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10
Bringing heaven to earth is a daunting task. Justice and mercy; grace and humility; generosity and peace. These qualities are difficult enough to cultivate in an individual let alone a community. But Jesus instructs us to pray for the entire planet to submit to the will of God and become a reflection of heaven. You might think this is difficult to imagine. I disagree. This is actually impossible for us to imagine.
We could no more envision God’s will for creation than we could correctly envision heaven itself. We tend to think that heaven is just an infinitely better version of this life. I believe that heaven is beyond anything we can conceive from this perspective. So how in the world are we supposed to bring heaven to earth?
The prayer is that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. If we submit to God’s will, earth will become God’s dwelling place, like heaven. Are you spending your days on earth striving to be obedient to God’s will? Or are you allowing sin, fear, and pride to rule your life?
God sent his Son so that we may have life and have it more abundantly. Creation is remade through the resurrection power of Christ. God invites us to be a part of this miracle. Sin and pride are defeated in Christ. Each day we are invited to live in the assurance of the Resurrection. The alternative is to live by your own will. The question is this. In whose kingdom do you choose to dwell? May you find peace in the knowledge that God’s grace is enough.
See you Sunday!
