Living on Purpose

Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. Psalm 37:5

I remember watching the U.S. men’s hockey team pull off their “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. This 10 yr old was blown away! I was hooked! Four years later I watched as Mary Lou Retton scored perfect 10s to squeak by and win the women’s all around gymnastics gold medal. Another Miracle! I remember thinking, “If I start training now, I could be in the Olympics in four years! Mary Lou is only a couple of years older than me!” (Never mind that I hated gymnastics and quit taking lessons when I was 8) As I remembered all the pain and suffering involved in gymnastics that little dream quickly died away.

I read somewhere that one of the great motivators in humanity is pain avoidance. I’ve been giving that some thought lately. How much of our behavior is based on this instinct? No one wants to feel pain. Whether physical or emotional, we avoid pain at almost any cost. But is this any way to live? What about living with a purpose? What about living on purpose?

We have all collected our share of painful memories. Some have experienced more than their fair share of pain in this life. It would be easy to slip into a habit of living to avoid pain. But God’s purpose for us is bigger than that! So, take some time this week to examine your life. How much of your energy is spent avoiding pain and how much is spent living on purpose? May you always seek God’s will for your life and strive to live in his purpose. Sure there will be pain. But this is where miracles happen!

See you Sunday!
