Christ the King

This Sunday is the last Sunday on the church calendar. It’s on this day that we celebrate Christ the King. We remember that Christ has won the victory over sin, death and chaos. This fact is easily forgotten in our violent world. It is up to us, the Body of Christ, to proclaim God’s love to the world. We must do so with our words and our actions.

This world is vulnerable to hate and fear. Our victorious King calls us to courage and love. When we surrender to the fear and bigotry of this world we betray Christ. When we refuse to “Love our neighbor as ourselves” we are disobeying the command of Christ.

Scripture never claims that love is easy. In fact, without Christ, we are not capable of the love God demands from us. Yes, the world is a scary place. We are called to follow Christ in spite of our fears. Love is the most powerful force in all creation. Granted, it can be difficult to see how love can change this world.

The apostle Paul writes in his letter to the church in Corinth, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.”

May we be the Church our victorious King has established in this world. Be in prayer for those who suffer the evils of violence. Be courageous in your love. Because of Christ, love never fails.
