Beatitudes

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:3-6)

The question for many when reading the beatitudes is this, “Can we be rich and still blessed?” The answer is found, not in our bank accounts, but in our attitudes. Those who feel entitled to their wealth and status have little capacity for gratitude, humility or empathy.

To be considered ‘meek’ in this world is rarely considered a virtue. But, in response to God’s blessings, there is no other proper response. We have a choice to make. Either we live as if we are entitled to all that we have because we earned it. Or we humbly remember our dependence upon God and live in humility and subservience to God’s will. It’s not as much about cash as it is about attitude.

We hunger and thirst for righteousness when we are in solidarity with the ‘have-nots’ of our society. Let us never forget that Christ can always be found among those with humble hearts. We are all God’s children in need of God’s grace.

See you Sunday!
