God's Way

Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him. (Matthew 20:30-34)

The journey was almost complete. The healing, the teaching, the parables and the miracles were all done. Jesus, his disciples and a large crowd of followers had left Jericho and were heading for Jerusalem. Jesus was focused on one thing – the cross.  But there was one more cry. Two blind men sitting along the way were crying out to Jesus “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!” The crowd surrounding Jesus told them to keep silent. But Jesus stopped and took notice.

Their cries were annoying to Jesus’ followers. They were considered sinners because of their blindness. They should keep silent in their suffering. Yet Jesus disagrees. Not only does he stop, he asks them to shout their request of him. “What do you want me to do for you?” Does Jesus really need clarification on this point? No. He is giving those without a voice in this world a chance to be heard. To listen to someone, to truly pay attention, is a pure act of love.

This is God’s way. God listens to our cries. God hears our suffering and pays attention, truly pays attention. If you are trying to be strong and suffer in silence because you believe that “nobody wants to hear me complain.” I encourage you to let it out. Begin with Jesus. I promise you this; the one who went to the cross for you will stop heaven and earth to listen to your cries. What happens next is the stuff of miracles; a pure act of love.

See you Sunday!
