Ashes

“Remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return.” –Genesis 3:19

Tonight, we will have our Ash Wednesday Service. It’s a very solemn service of repentance, which marks the beginning of Lent. Most of us don’t relish the idea of confessing or repenting of our sin. We would much rather go on with our lives content with the knowledge that ‘there are folks more depraved than I am’. Unfortunately, there is no chance for healing, wholeness, or peace in this way of thinking. As sinners in a sinful world, we are in constant need of healing.

Think about your self-esteem right now. Do you perceive yourself correctly? Do you think a little too much of yourself? Are you thinking too little of yourself? Are you proud and vein or guilt ridden? These are maladies of the soul brought about by our pride or abuse by others. And we are all victims of this illness. So, what’s to be done about it?

…the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’ From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’  -Matthew 4:16-18

Repent. Jesus has brought light into the darkness of our souls. We must repent, turn away from our sin and brokenness, in order to bask in this light. I invite you into the season of repentance. It may seem a little dark but the Light is well worth it.

See you tonight!
