Christmas

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:8-9

Why shepherds? Why did God make this announcement to them? Angels broke through that silent night and appeared before shepherds living outside with livestock. They scared these poor, simple men to death. Why them? Why not the high priests? Why not a humble, local Rabbi? Why not some faithful servant of God waiting for the Messiah to come? Why shepherds?

I think God has a special relationship with shepherds. A good shepherd cares for the flock. He keeps them safe and fed. He leads them beside still waters, knowing that a swift current could carry them under. He seeks out the lamb that wanders off. He is even willing to risk his life to fight off predators that might devour his sheep. Good shepherds are humble, self-sacrificing, and courageous.

This Christmas, I invite you to reflect on the angel’s announcement on that silent night so many years ago. They came to proclaim that our Good Shepherd has come to us. That is surely Good News of great joy for all people.

See you Sunday!
